Description

I think I promised no more Frog Fish Photos for a while a little time ago, the day has finally come though to post another. Here is a Painted Frog Fish in vibrant Yellow and Maroon, found him hiding on the opposite side of a reef ledge and in the twilight of the dive, he was quite well hidden. It’s extremely odd with underwater photography how your eyes will see a fish like this one as exactly the same color as his surroundings, but when you shine your light on them for a photo all their amazing colours jump out at you.

This is obviously something that super camouflage critters like Frog Fish rely on, bad eye sight of large predators. You can see why so many other species have developed ways of combating this disadvantage, like Sharks & Rays which hunt via many other methods, because no matter how good your eye sight is, Frog Fish are hard to spot!

This one was likely waiting for dark to do a little bit of night hunting, he seemed fairly agitated by me and the light, I probably confused the hell out him, one moment he would have been getting ready for a night out on the town, the next, OMG where did this new sun come from and why can’t I see anything. Sorry little buddy, you look great though!

What do you get when you combine, clear waters, lots of sunshine, good divers & tonnes of fish! You get great photos of course, well maybe, a few things still need to come together, like the fish moving out of the way, not crashing into coral behind you and students who stay out of the backdrop. Let [...]

Bay 1 Scooter Phuket

So explaining this image is actually slightly sad. The Scooter is in/on a dive site here in Phuket named Bay 1. When I first arrived and started working in Phuket Bay 1 was my absolute favorite dive site. Macro was absolutely amazing, not something you'd expect from a damaged reef area. You would [...]

Tiger Tail Sea Horse – How To Shoot, That Which Won’t Be Shot

I've talked many times previously about the tricks to successfully shooting Sea Horses, they are inherently shy reef critters who dislike any kind of lighting. Think Angelina Jolie anti Paparazzi level, you have to time your shots and play it smart otherwise you will fail to get the photo you want. [...]

On a day with insanely strong current and 1 meter visibility I decided to go hunt for one of my favourite subjects, Sharks! Thankfully I know where a few Bamboo Sharks like to hide out during the day and thankfully they were where I had hoped. During the day these little guys, only about 4 feet l [...]
