Description

Want to see an ugly fish? Ok, here is the Striated Frog Fish, white as a ghost with a face only a mother could love. Look at that big ugly nose and gigantic oversized head, these fish really do ake me laugh when I find them, sitting in the black sands of long gone volcanic eruptions.

I titled this photo, ‘My Camouflage Really Sucks”, in this shot, it’s true, you would think that these critters would be an easy spot right? Life is never really that simple, these Frog Fish have this extreme white coloration to blend in with the thousands of Sea Urchin carcasses that litter the sandy bottom. The Urchin body after it dies, loses all it’s spikes, fish & bacteria eat and clean the urchin’s insides, leaving only a bleached white shell like structure. So as you dive over those areas you have to inspect almost every single white shell to see if it’s a Urchin husk, or one of these White Striated Froggies.

Thankfully in Dumaguete, Philippines, they were fairly common, especially as stated on black volcanic sandy sites. Since there was literally nothing else around, for framing a background, I tried to use the sand, twigs and leaves that he was sitting in, to provide so depth of field to the image, while contrasting just how white he is against a blackened background, enjoy!

Kelloggi Seahorse – Kata Beach

Continuing on with Seahorse week I would like to introduce the Kelloggi Seahorse (Hippocampus Kelloggi), or also known as the Great Seahorse, not sure what is so great about it compared to other Seahorses but it's still pretty cool. If you want to identify a Kelloggi, look for a backwards curved [...]

Long Nosed Hawk Fish

It pays to ask the guides if they have any favourite critters or special spots on a dive site where you might find something rare, potentially something you won't have to contend with other photographers for a chance at snapping. Whilst in Egypt we did just that on Elphinstone, a very popular div [...]

Big Ol Giant Frog Fish, Or Is it?

I've been trying hard of late to stop uploading & or taking photos of Frog Fish, but it seems to be a bit of an addiction, just can't stop myself. Anyway, here is another lovely specimen from the Philippines, Pescador Island, Moal Boal. This one I think, or at least to the best of my knowledge is a [...]

Glass Shrimp – Well That’s What I’m Calling It Anyway

If you can't find a door make one, it's a favourite saying of mine I apply to photography, essentially, if you can't find interesting critters to photograph, try taking interesting photographs of critters that most people will dis-regard. The dive in question was a muck/macro dive with not much goin [...]
