Description

Want to see an ugly fish? Ok, here is the Striated Frog Fish, white as a ghost with a face only a mother could love. Look at that big ugly nose and gigantic oversized head, these fish really do ake me laugh when I find them, sitting in the black sands of long gone volcanic eruptions.

I titled this photo, ‘My Camouflage Really Sucks”, in this shot, it’s true, you would think that these critters would be an easy spot right? Life is never really that simple, these Frog Fish have this extreme white coloration to blend in with the thousands of Sea Urchin carcasses that litter the sandy bottom. The Urchin body after it dies, loses all it’s spikes, fish & bacteria eat and clean the urchin’s insides, leaving only a bleached white shell like structure. So as you dive over those areas you have to inspect almost every single white shell to see if it’s a Urchin husk, or one of these White Striated Froggies.

Thankfully in Dumaguete, Philippines, they were fairly common, especially as stated on black volcanic sandy sites. Since there was literally nothing else around, for framing a background, I tried to use the sand, twigs and leaves that he was sitting in, to provide so depth of field to the image, while contrasting just how white he is against a blackened background, enjoy!

Spotted Dragonet – All Over Kata Beach, Phuket

Here is another macro critter that likes to pretend to be sand, hint, it is not sand, it is a fish. Some Dragonet's enjoy being crazy colorful, some enjoy being very small, some just enjoy having patterns that make them blend into the sandy muck bottoms of Kata Beach. These Spotted Dragonet's are [...]

Sleepy Leopard Shark

This one is no different, we dropped in on our dive site, and my buddy immediately started pointing at the ground at about 18 Meters, I looked down and there was a Leopard Shark, resting on the sand in fairly str [...]

Ambon Scorpion Fish – Not Just A Seasonal Fluke

Last season at Kata Beach (Nov 2017 - May 2018) I posted some fairly interesting finds, one of which was, of course, the Ambon Scorpion Fish, something that is not meant to be in the waters around Phuket and something as far as I know, had not been found by anyone else here (bragging). We did qui [...]

Ambon Scorpion Fish – An Unexpected Find In Phuket

If there is a fish you don't expect to see while diving in the crystal clear waters of Phuket Thailand it must be the Ambon Scorpion Fish. The first time I was lucky enough to see one was diving in Dumaguete on the Island of Negros in the Philippines. Dumaguete is an area of the diving world tha [...]
