Description

I’ve been trying hard of late to stop uploading & or taking photos of Frog Fish, but it seems to be a bit of an addiction, just can’t stop myself. Anyway, here is another lovely specimen from the Philippines, Pescador Island, Moal Boal. This one I think, or at least to the best of my knowledge is a Giant Frog Fish, they fall somewhere in the common to uncommon range for Frog fish, most of the giants have a uniform color, no spots and are relatively easy to id, this one not quite so much, though 90% certain it is a Giant Frog fish.

He was also in a rather odd position which made for an interesting lighting opportunity with this photo, he had perched himself between a gap from two opposing pieces of rock, looked sort of like he was trying to hold two pieces of the reef together. The rocks and corals he was holding onto, fell away rather quickly and he was pointing outward from the rocks. This allowed me to get the lighting mostly on his face and prevent most of the background corals being visible. That’s not the easiest thing to do with my setup and the strong video lights, but was worth the trouble to frame the intended target better.

I also like the fact that he is smiling, or grimacing, whatever you want to call it. The white for me from his mouth provides real contrast in the image and makes him easier to visually discover. Sometimes when looking at Froggy pictures, you really do wonder where bits of their features end and begin. So yeah, camouflage wise, he wasn’t doing an overly great job at hiding, I spotted him with almost no deco time left, which seems to happen a lot more than I’d like it too and decided I could spare a few minutes to capture him, to hell with no stop diving.

Thankfully there was no current & he was also still as a ghost, this let me get him dead center and horizontally uniform through the image with little to no effort, he was big, so no need for the macro lenses, 5 – 8 shots, this one being my pic of the bunch. Enjoy!

Political correctness out the window, to me, Cockatoo Wasp Fish are the retards of ocean dwelling fish. They look so very stupid, but tha [...]
