Description

Up until last month, I had seen maybe 3 Pygmy Pipe Horses in over 8 years of scuba diving, in fact, Pygmy Pipe Horses were fairly mythical and rare for the waters of Thailand. I remember the only place we ever found them with any certainty was Richelieu Rock Similan Islands and the Surin Islands.

Here is the first Pygmy Pipe Horse I ever found, all the way back in 2015 at Richelieu Rock, how freaking awesome is it!

Recently though, I’ve seen probably closer to another 50 unique Pygmy Pipe Horses over the course of about 4 dives thanks to a special find at Kata Beach. Here is a snippet of those finds.

Crazy right, they are out there in a special spot just clinging to pretty much everything with their prehensile tail swinging about in the current and surge. Directions to the special spot are secret so that other divers don’t damage it, the area is very fragile and so will remain hidden for now.

The reason I posted the main image above is that it has taken me a few hundred shots over the last few weeks to get even a half decent portrait shot of the face of a Pygmy Pipe Horse, yes it could still be better, but dam these guys hate staying still.

He kinda looks like an angry duck telling you to F^(% off, enjoy!

Yellow Tiger Tail Seahorse

Tiger Tail Sea Horse

It is always a beautiful day when you find Sea Horse while diving, they are such weird little underwater specimens that you can't help but sit and stare, occasionally I remember to take photographs of them. Sygnathiformes are notoriously hard critters to take quality photos of, they have a habit of [...]

Hawksbill Sea Turtle

Hawksbill Sea Turtle

It's not difficult finding Turtles, they exist on pretty much any reef anywhere in the world and thanks to education and human compassion they are making a massive comeback in our oceans. This is good for photographers, we get far more opportunities spent with them and hopefully snap some shots like [...]

The Juvenile Yellow Box Fish

When I showed this photo to a few photographer friends on the boat I was on, not long after I'd taken it, I simply got the same response from each one of them, 'OMG, I hate these fish', or something with a few more swear words mixed in. Seriously, they are painful fish to get a good photo of, timid, [...]

Finding Tigertail Sea Horses In Phuket

Hopefully you are not sick of seeing Yellow Tiger Tail Sea Horses yet, because there are going to me more pictures of them coming from me in the future, that is actually a symptom of doing photography work in Phuket where Tiger Tails are the most common if not the only type of Sea Horse we find.
