Description

IF you are a fan of Frog Fish like me, you will find yourself running into the very same problems I do each and every time I find one while diving, “What frigging species is this one?”. It’s almost a full time job some days trying to figure it out and I’ll be honest, fish ID books pay Frog Fish very little attention, for some reason those books focus heavily on the smaller fishes like Gobies, Damsel, Anthias, and on Sharks, Rays, Eels and things people tend to see more of, Frog Fish are rare, and extremely good at hiding, so maybe that’s why they don’t get the same kind of attention.

Thankfully there is a resource to help us, I found it while in another ID frenzy, it’s called Zubi’s Frogfish Photos, I don’t personally know Zubi, but I thank him/her for their contribution and the time it saves me. Check it out if you are ever having trouble ID’ing a Frog Fish!

The one pictured here is a small Painted Frog Fish, the spots on the fins and body give it away. He was walking around on the silty floor trying to get onto the rope swinging in the current, I love watching them walk and tried to capture it a little bit in this photo, enjoy!

Long-Spined Tripod Fish – Juvenile

The last dive on Kata Beach turned up something pretty interesting, or at least it became far more interesting later on while viewing the day's snaps. I 100% thought I was taking photos of a juvenile Filefish, but when I got home and tried to ID the type of Filefish, I was surprised to see that [...]

Sea Pen Goby – You Can See What He Is Thinking

We have spent most of this dive season again on Kata Beach because there is just so much out there to see and lack of other divers is also a bonus. This Goby image is from a 4 hour solo dive where I probably did not go over 8 meters at anytime as there was a ton of little macro critters. If yo [...]

Common Seahorse – Kata Beach

Keeping with this week theme of Seahorse photos here is a very dirty little Common Seahorse (Hippocampus Kuda), why is he dirty, well just look at him, obviously has not had a bath or shave in a while. Usually you don't get Seahorses covered in hair or algae like this one, I would say this is a l [...]

Crinoid Squat Lobster – Surfing A Feather Star

Sadly if you travel through certain places in Indonesia & the Philippines you will see an alarming trend with dive instructors, guides and photographers using their pointers, tank bangers and metal rods of all kinds to move critters to better spots for photos. Feather Stars, the thing the lobster is [...]
