Description

Ever done deep photography? It’s actually a lot of fun, recreationally with some extra training you are certified to dive up to 40 Meters, on this day I was training someone for that and we happened to sit down right next to this huge Jenkins Whip Ray, right at 40 meters. Down there, you have absolutely no color because the light is not only dim, but also filtered by the vast amount of water on top of you. Photo’s at that depth are a fight to get color into, if you don’t have powerful strobes or very strong video lights, don’t even bother.

This is a photo I really like because it highlights just how green and ugly the water can be in the background but how vibrant a subject can still be in the foreground, the bright purple of his inner gills, the yellow of his eyes and the fading out of his body colors into the murky blue/green water behind him. Scale in this photo is a little lost, but he was at least 2 Meters, tip to tail, he certainly didn’t have any worries down there, king of the castle and not interested in moving, which was good for me, making it relatively easy to get this shot before my customer kicked up all the sand he possibly could.

Smiling Bamboo Shark

On a day with insanely strong current and 1 meter visibility I decided to go hunt for one of my favourite subjects, Sharks! Thankfully I know where a few Bamboo Sharks like to hide out during the day and thankfully they were where I had hoped. During the day these little guys, only about 4 feet l [...]

Spotted Dragonet – All Over Kata Beach, Phuket

Here is another macro critter that likes to pretend to be sand, hint, it is not sand, it is a fish. Some Dragonet's enjoy being crazy colorful, some enjoy being very small, some just enjoy having patterns that make them blend into the sandy muck bottoms of Kata Beach. These Spotted Dragonet's are [...]

Juvenille Yellow Box Fish

The Juvenile Yellow Box Fish 2

It may have been horrible diving this low season in Phuket, but that doesn't mean the fish are not still there, it just means it is about three times more difficult to find them and get a decent photo! Juvenile Yellow Box Fish are fairly common even on some of the less coral heavy sites, so they mak [...]

Painted Frog Fish – Look For The Spots

IF you are a fan of Frog Fish like me, you will find yourself running into the very same problems I do each and every time I find one while diving, "What frigging species is this one?". It's almost a full time job some days trying to figure it out and I'll be honest, fish ID books pay Frog Fish very [...]
