Description

Actually this was not a night dive, it was just very dark and with the right camera settings it was simple enough to turn the dark expanse of navy blue behind this little shrimp to blackness. I normally don’t like taking photos of Whip Coral denizens, there is a nasty trait amongst guides to move the shrimp, crabs or gobies that enjoy living on the whips for a better shot. I truly hate this behavior and usually the critters are very non-cooperative for photos, so it’s not worth the time most days.

Though from time to time, you find a nice, still, easy going subject intent on doing something other than hiding from your camera. Also lack of current was a factor in getting this shot, but cooperation from this little shrimp was probably 90% of the shot. He stayed quite still, didn’t shy from the lights & let me take several shots of him from different angles, of which I find this one is my favorite.

Due to the angle of the whip coral I was not able to get a front facing shot which I’m a big fan of, though I assume most photographers probably have no qualms about shifting critters like this, I choose to leave them alone and capture them without interference.

White Eyed Moray – The Forest Through The Tree’s

I'm a big fan of Moray Eels, they always look like they are trying to tell a really bad joke or laughing maniacally at one. This one is called a White Eyed Moray, for obvious reasons, they don't get very big in most cases, and love to play/hunt inside the green cup and fan corals that abound on the [...]

Juvenile Decorator Crab

If you had not read the title coming here I would bet 5$ that you have no idea what the hell this thing is, am I right? To be fair, I'm taking an educated guess as I've never seen the decorator crab without it immensely dense coral growth protecting it, but these spider looking crabs simply don't fi [...]

Leafy Scorpion Fish – Ghostly White

For me one of the hardest of all the scorpion fish's to find is this one, the Leaf or Leafy Scorpion. Why is it so hard to find, when other species like bearded and devils literally turn up everywhere, good question, I don't know the answer, just that their rarity makes them a very exciting opportun [...]
