Description

Apart from being rare, hard to find & beautiful, the Zebra Moray is also annoyingly bashful, preferring to spend it time hiding from anything even remotely resembling a camera or scuba diver. Here in Phuket, where I found this one, we see them very very rarely, there is no dive site we can conclusively say, yes we will see a Zebra Moray, possibly Shark Point being your best bet to find them if they were high on your list, but by no means a guarantee.

So when found, your next mini ordeal begins, attempting to get a photo of them, they are not free swimming inclined and will almost certainly be buried deep into a hiding place. You can wait all you want for them to move for a better shot, but experience has shown me they are quite happy where they are, so actually in this case you are better off trying to get your light onto them right away and snap a shot.

This one as you can see was deep inside a mushroom coral structure, I had to position my lights quite carefully, in fact the light comes from the left side in this show, falling off on the right to hide anymore of the background being visible. Hopefully One day i will get a chance at seeing these magnificent & beautiful morays out hunting or at least with their head out of the rock :)

Occasionally in underwater photography you do get a little too close to your subjects, the thrill of what you are doing can sometimes get the better of you and you think, just one more inch, just a little bit closer, most of the time, no problem, the critter will stay still, move off or give you a w [...]

Spiny Sea Horse – Bohol Philippines

I've talked many times about the difficulty in using large video lights in conjunction with getting photos of Synathiformes, a fancy name for Sea Horses & their relatives. They really don't like bright lights! So how do you get shots like this without a strobe or two? If you have had experience shin [...]

Algae Octopus At Kata Beach

If someone asked me what is the most annoying underwater critter to ID after taking a photo of it, hands down has to be Octopus. Other Cephalopods, Fishes and Crabs tend to have defining features which makes ID'ing them relatively straight forward, also because those animals can't change their appea [...]
