Description

Bit of a throwback Thursday for me today, so here is some full frame Sea Horse love. I was sorting through my Sea Horse photos as I’d been approached by Nature Research magazine to provide some pictures of them, but they specifically wanted non artistic stuff, which means something more like this, with the whole little beasty filling up the entirety of the frame.

This happens to be one of the few un-cropped and good full frame shots of a Sea Horse I’ve managed to take, the lack of background helps a great deal also, think flat gravel/sand bottom. As most photographers know, Sea Horse’s & Syngnathiforme’s hate strobes and lights, so they will turn their backs to you almost immediately making shots like this very hard.

You need some patience with these critters, it typically means holding your lights off of them until they (hopefully) move into a favorable position. If not, well you move on, touching them with pointers to move them for photos is a deplorable behavior for any photographer to engage in as far as I’m concerned. Wait, shoot, wait again. Be nice to them and muchof the time they will return the favor with a brief opportunity to get shots like this one.

Enjoy :)

Whip Coral Shrimp In The Black Of Night

Actually this was not a night dive, it was just very dark and with the right camera settings it was simple enough to turn the dark expanse of navy blue behind this little shrimp to blackness. I normally don't like taking photos of Whip Coral denizens, there is a nasty trait amongst guides to move th [...]

Spooky Halloween Hermit Crab

If you have never seen a Halloween Hermit Crab before don't be too surprised, I've only ever seen them very far up into Myanmar, they definitely don't seem to be in Phuket waters or elsewhere I've traveled, but it wouldn't surprise me to find out they are a dime a dozen somewhere else in the world.
