Sea Pen Goby – You Can See What He Is Thinking

Description

We have spent most of this dive season again on Kata Beach because there is just so much out there to see and lack of other divers is also a bonus.

This Goby image is from a 4 hour solo dive where I probably did not go over 8 meters at anytime as there was a ton of little macro critters.

If you are experienced with photographing things on Sea Fans/Sea Pens, than you will know just how fun it is to do super macro on a constantly moving and constantly rotating Sea Pen, with a critter that will move at the slightest disturbance such as a Goby.

Thankfully this little guy managed to settle himself for a moment and I was able to snap this shot. I will be honest I wasn’t expecting much from this series of photos, but when I saw them on the computer I realized I could see all the way into his brain and through it apparently. Normally the Goby’s have spots or some coloring preventing a 100% transparent body like this, but it is pretty cool.

I’m not sure what he is thinking at this point, but it was probably something like “who is this dude and why is he trying to cook me with giant video lights”, or it was just “food, hide, food”.

Enjoy :)

Striated Frog Fish – My Camouflage Really Sucks

Want to see an ugly fish? Ok, here is the Striated Frog Fish, white as a ghost with a face only a mother could love. Look at that big ugly nose and gigantic oversized head, these fish really do ake me laugh when I find them, sitting in the black sands of long gone volcanic eruptions. I titled thi [...]

Zebra Moray Is The Shyest Of Morays

Apart from being rare, hard to find & beautiful, the Zebra Moray is also annoyingly bashful, preferring to spend it time hiding from anything even remotely resembling a camera or scuba diver. Here in Phuket, where I found this one, we see them very very rarely, there is no dive site we can conclusiv [...]

Algae Octopus At Kata Beach

If someone asked me what is the most annoying underwater critter to ID after taking a photo of it, hands down has to be Octopus. Other Cephalopods, Fishes and Crabs tend to have defining features which makes ID'ing them relatively straight forward, also because those animals can't change their appea [...]

Cool Kuhl Stingray

When talking to people about the Dasyatis kuhlii we refer to it as a Kuhl Stingray, so of course every body then asks us 'why is it so cool', we usually walk away at about that point, admittedly they are cool, but I'm not going to tell my customers with 6 dives that we are probably going to see a 'D [...]
