Description

If there is a fish you don’t expect to see while diving in the crystal clear waters of Phuket Thailand it must be the Ambon Scorpion Fish.

The first time I was lucky enough to see one was diving in Dumaguete on the Island of Negros in the Philippines. Dumaguete is an area of the diving world that is renowned for Rare and crazy macro life, it’s one of the rivals to Lembeh for places to visit if you are a photographer and regularly shows it up with Flamboyant Cuttle Fish, Ribbon Eels, Hairy Frog Fish and so much more.

Finding the Ambon Scorpion in Phuket is like winning a diving lottery, I’ve seen 4 Ambons ever, over 2 dives, they like to hang out in pairs as far as I can tell from my brief experience with them. Compare that to Whale Sharks, I’ve seen maybe 30 Whale Sharks on dives. The point is, Ambons are really really really really freaking rare!

Ambons are characterized as odd shaped bottom dwellers and are renowned for their massive arching eyebrows and beautifully decorated pectoral fins. They are also a prised aquarium fish, hence why I’m not going into detail about where we found them, just to say they are 100%, now been found in the Waters of Phuket.

Who knows what else is out there :)

Juvenile Octopus – Hunting In The Muck

Night diving is one of my favourite types of diving, something unbelievable like half of the life that exists on healthy reefs, is nocturnal. This means, you can only see those animals at night, or certain behavior will only happen in the dark. Don't forget the amazing colors of everyday things is s [...]

Sharing Space The Moray Way

When I took this photo I immediately labelled it 'why can't we all just get along' and posted it to Facebook. Bay 1 Scooter Phuket

So explaining this image is actually slightly sad. The Scooter is in/on a dive site here in Phuket named Bay 1. When I first arrived and started working in Phuket Bay 1 was my absolute favorite dive site. Macro was absolutely amazing, not something you'd expect from a damaged reef area. You would [...]
